What YOU need to know about Ecology at FUMC

The group normally meets at 7 PM on the 4th Thursday of the month. Call (786-0562) or email (dave.julie.m@juno.com) David Marckini to verify the meeting schedule. Our interests and relationships include the following:

Recycling—1st and 3rd Sundays, after both services, we accept CLEAN Styrofoam, batteries, ink cartridges, cell phones, hard plastic caps. The church recycles paper, cardboard, plastics 1-7, glass, metal (cans, aluminum) used on site.
We encourage Reducing use and Reuse, the latter in part through our Freecycle board where you can list things you need or want to dispose of for no charge.
We support electronic waste recycling approximately 4 times a year in conjunction with West Michigan Creation Care and old pharmaceutical disposal twice a year in conjunction with Ottawa County.
We attempt to answer your questions about recycling—e.g., what and where.
We encourage all church events where food is served to use the church china and silverware and wash same rather than use disposables. If disposables seem necessary, please use biodegradable products.

Energy conservation and clean energy: we encourage reduced electrical consumption through use of Compact Fluorescent and LED bulbs, better insulation, and use of Energy Star appliances. We strongly support local groups such as WEST who are encouraging the city, businesses and individuals to use sustainable energy practices and renewable energy sources such as wind, solar, etc., and to reduce and ultimately eliminate use of fossil fuels such as coal and oil. We know that global warming is a reality and support all efforts to reduce carbon emissions.

Composting: We encourage composting of fruit and vegetable waste both for church events (compost bin site proposed) and at home. We can assist you with obtaining or building a compost bin. We also occasionally provide worms to assist your compost process whereby you obtain a very rich worm humus product for use in fertilizing.

West Michigan Creation Care: We are members of WMCC, an association of West Michigan lakeshore churches who are dedicated to efforts in support of caring for God’s creation. The group normally meets at 7 PM at Western Seminary on the 4th Monday of the month. We assist each other in recycling, education, gardening, and other projects/activities.

United Methodist Church website: Become familiar with projects and ideas across the UMC denomination by visiting their website—umc-gbcs.org—and looking under Issues and News for the Faith in Action segment.
